Hew attended art school acquiring undergraduate and post graduate qualifications in Sculpture.
'I am technically speaking—self taught; despite my academic qualifications. Much of the expertise accrued hard won, springing from a passion for the medium of stone and learned through investigation, success and many failures. Some of my signature techniques are the result of unintended outcomes at the time.
It is easier to distract by details. The simpler something appears the harder it has been to achieve. I work in an animistic, intuitive and somewhat ‘zen’ manner. It is—in my opinion; very difficult to best nature however I try to peel away a skin to reveal what lies just below the surface. As I grow older and more confident of who I am and where I come from I find the genetic legacies of my ancestors increasingly emerging in my attitudes and ultimately my goals. Sometimes clarity comes through the simple act of daydreaming
Time and space, nostalgia, the loss of innocence and the internal intuitions of memory and thought are positioned by a methodology directed by the demands of the medium.
Stone is the mother.
Earth is the inspiration.
Once facing West; now facing East.
The work is as it is'
